Letter to Council: Backup Beepers in Downtown

Mayor Helps and Council City of Victoria No.1 Centennial Square Victoria, BC V8W 1P6

Re: Council Member Motion – Backup Beepers in Downtown

Dear Mayor Helps and Council,

The DRA conducted its Downtown Livability Solutions Town Hall Meeting on 1 October 2014 at which approximately 75 downtown residents met to discuss livability issues for residents downtown. It was astounding the number of attendees who voiced concerns that the use of backup beepers primarily by commercial and service vehicles operating at early hours was a major livability issue. The recent news of the proposed relocation of the Victoria Fire Department Headquarters to a densely populated residential neighbourhood in Downtown only adds to these concerns.

The cost of retrofitting existing vehicles to the broadband devices that were referenced in the newspaper articles in the motion is extremely low and would greatly enhance downtown livability. We applaud this motion and recommend that Council support a conversion to broadband beepers for City vehicles and any commercial vehicle operating between 9:00 pm and 8:00 am within City limits.

Sincerely,

Ian Sutherland For the Board – Downtown Residents Association
