Park(ing) Day is a global, public, participatory project where people across the world temporarily repurpose curbside parking spaces and convert them into public parks and social spaces to advocate for safer, greener, and more equitable streets for people.
The Victoria Downtown Residents Association and the Greater Victoria Placemaking Network, along with the Invisible Water/Ways project, are collaborating to animate seven parking spaces on Broad Street just south of Pandora Avenue.
Our activation, SPEAK TO THE CREEK, invites all to participate in reclaiming this part of Broad Street for people and placemaking. A temporary parklet encourages passersby to engage with the plants, take a seat, and make art. Enjoy a free bicycle-blended smoothie, play a game of corn hole or giant Scrabble, take part in a art activity, contribute to a collaborative poem, or relax in a cozy reading nook. Guided walking tours by the Invisible Water/Ways project will trace the original creek that once flowed under the street.
Schedule (subject to change):
12-1 pm - Free bicycle-blended smoothies
1-2 pm - Poetry readings by Michael Kenyon from Broad Street Blues
2-3 pm - Guided walking tour of Johnson Creek
3-4 pm - Free bicycle-blended smoothies
4-5 pm - Guided walking tour of Johnson Creek
Accessibility information:
The event will take place in the parking spaces on the east side of the 1400 block of Broad Street, which is at the same level as the sidewalk. The site is wheelchair-accessible and there will be seating and shaded areas available. The north end of the event is close to Pandora Avenue, where there is often busy and/or noisy vehicle traffic. We encourage those who are able to walk, cycle or take public transit to the event. The City of Victoria's free bicycle valet is just across the street. Everyone is welcome, including seniors, children and folks who use mobility devices.
